Electric antenna vs printed on glass type - wagons

I am going to be replacing a 700 series wagon (original electric whip type radio antenna) with a late 900 series wagon. The newer car has the amplified in-glass antenna and the same model SC-811 head unit that I installed in the 700 car.

My instinct is to say the mast is a better performer but there is info that I have found that the diversity type printed antenna might actually be the winner.

Has anybody here either installed a mast antenna in a 93+ 900 wagon or owned both type cars and can state that one type performs better than the other? I am really asking about distance reception - the car will be making a cross-(two)-country trip so a lot of time will be away from cities.
