Driving without a flame trap 200

Is anybody else driving without a flame trap? I took mine out for a long over due cleaning. It wasn't clogged (most of the little pin holes were clear) but it was filthy. I scraped out the crusty oil residue inside the housing and noticed just how small the hole in the housing is. Its about 1/4 of an inch. I've had small amounts of oil seeping out around the oil cap and the rear cam seal for years despite replacing the flame trap about once a year. Never bothered fixing it because it is such a minor leak. I don't have a brand new flame trap on hand so I figured what the hell, lets just run it without and see what happens. I cleaned the area around the oil leaks and we'll see what happens. Other than the obvious backfire that could ignite the crankcase without a flame trap do you see any other problem not using a flame trap? Is anybody else running without?
I use synthetic 5w40 oil changed religiously. The 89 240 has 140k miles in tip top shape. The engine consumes about 1 quart between the 8k miles oil changes.
