I've heard this before from brick owners and a Volvo specific mechanic/historian I refer to locally... it deals with a resonant valve slapping sound similar to the knock of a diesel... I've read that this situation was addressed to several Volvo dealerships as the cars aged and that Volvo "knew" this would occur... blah blah! SO how do you stop it? Valve adjustment? Seal replacement? New Cam/lifters?
I'm getting tired of when I "stretch" my oil between changes and the sound gets more apparent I get these questions from other motorists at stop lights>> "Hey you got a diesel Volvo?" or "SO how many MPG's you get on that diesel?"
