Fuel door hinge installation 700 1989

Hi all,
I purchased the replacement fuel door hinge from EEuroparts for the new to me 740ti. Well, it won't stay in place. It has molded in expanding nubs that go into the holes in the sheet metel. I installed it and it easily snapped into place. When i tried to install the actual door, the hinge part fell out. OK so now I install the door on the hinge first and press the hinge into the sheetmetal, it stayed in place until I tried to open the door and it fell off of course. Is there a trick to keep this hinge installed? It is a dreaded ScanTech part. The rubber grommets seem a little too thick and do not allow the expanding pegs to enter the sheetmetal very deeply. Any ideas?
