Auto tranny - play in shifter and new *clink* sound(?) 200 1988

Hello Brickboard,

Indobrick, my '88 wagon (odo died about 6 months ago at 269,000kms -but that's another story) with AW70. Noticed today the shifter has more fore and aft play than I recall AND a new metallic click sound coming from under the car when I shift to neutral at lights or to Park when stopping. Used to make a nice clunk - low frequency more felt through the hand than the ears but I don't like this higher frequency clearly audible clink.

My question: Anyone else experience this? After a quick search of the archives I'm assuming bushes/washers in linkage. I'm so tempted to leave this to my trusty mechanic. The Indobrick is due for her annual service in August; will she last 8 months? Only gets driven on weekends but I was planning a 1000km road trip in March. I think I just answered my own question. OK - is this a big job?

Thanks in advance and happy birthday (almost) BB.

Long Live BB!
