1984 DL knocking noise, near power stearing

I've been hearing this terrible knocking noise that has just gotten worse over the course of a cross country trip. It seems to be coming from the power steering reservoir and and is somewhat erratic. it will increase and then disappear if the RPMs are raised. it sounds like metal knocking on hollow plastic. could it be the pulley or some sort of clutch?
