Sound insulation

Hello,

I will soon be replacing the carpet and trim in my 240 sedan and will take the opportunity to add insulation to add more inside comfort and cut on road noise. I plan to use Fatmat, as it's affordable, an on the floor, add carpet padding on top of that.

I visited Dave Shan's website and his insulation page but a few questions remain: what is the best way to apply that stuff efficiently to the doors while still allowing access to fix or maintain door components such as widow or lock mechanisms? I will be installing electric windows at the same time so the doors will be empty. Does it make any sense to apply that stuff to the inside of the exterior metal panel (inside the door), or only to the panel facing the inside of the vehicle.

Should I then double up the Fatmat installation on the doors with something else or would that be enough for that application? Currently there's nothing else between the door panel and the door itself.

On the floor, after applying the Fatmat (and then the carpet padding), should I cut holes in all the places where there would be drain holes (or plugged holes) in the floor board? On Dave Shan's page, I don't see any holes being cut but that doesn't seem right to me. If holes are needed, should they be only cut in the Fatmat layer, or in the carpet padding as well? And in which specific cases would the holes need to be made or not? I suppose the Fatmat would be water tight.

And one last question, for people who have done this already, would I have enough of 50 square feet of material to cover the whole car, the whole floor, each door panel, foot areas, fire wall area, trunk, and eventually under the hood?

Thanks very much.
