As the fridged weather takes over Mn I have been working in a heated portion of the garage. The B20 is assembled - need to do valve adjustments but that is a different question.
I have 3 M40 transmissions. I pulled one apart to replace bearings. Found the layshaft worn where the needle bearings run. No problem, I pulled the layshaft from another transmission that was in good condition. After a few attempts the transmission was assembled, but the shaft will only turn when in the neutral position. I have confirmed that everything (dogs etc) are properly positioned.
I'm thinking that the layshaft gears have to match the mainshaft gears and there is enough interference that keeps the gear from turning. In other words I can't mix the gears between transmissions?
Anyone been here before. I'm confident of the assembly after takeing the top off the third transmission.
As an aside, the newest transmission from behind a B20, has a heavier output bearing than the two transmission connected to B18 engines. The gasket kit from IPD included a seal that would only fit with the "B20" transmission. Outer and inner dimensions were the same but the width was significantly different.
