How long do water pumps last? Should I replace after at least 150k? 200

I bought my '92 wagon in 1998, at 121,000 miles. Now, in 2007, I've got over 270,000 miles and I have never replaced the water pump. My current pump shows no signs of impending failure. At any rate, I'm wondering if I should replace the pump ASAP, or if I should let it go until it shows signs of failure. It seems like my pump has lasted well beyond its life expectancy. I have no idea why. It seems like a lot of people are replacing pumps with every timing belt change. It makes me wonder if I am missing something.

Come to think of it, my wifes '88, at 281k, shows no signs of needing a water pump either.

Thanks for the advice!
