Coolant Temperature sensor 900 1995

I have a 1995/940 and I would like to make sure the coolant temperature sensor is working properly. I haven't seen the fan ever running on this car. By doing a self diagnostic the fan runs in both speeds, but never heard the fun running while sitting in traffic. The temperature gage stays in the middle as normal. I have another car with the same engine and the fan turns on and off in the situations is expected to do so. Can anyone show me a method to test the sensor. Thanks
