I have a 1988 760 GLE which will only engage in reverse gear. on a level surface, when placed in a forward gear with the engine warmed up, I can rev the engine to about 3600 rpm and the car will barly start to roll. As it picks up speed to maybe 10 mph, the transmission starts to buck, as though it wants to either fully engage or shift to another gear. The fluid level seems to be correct,(when checked with the engine warmed up and idling) and doesn't appear burned or discolored. Does this sound like a common problem with this transmission? Is there a fix besides the total replacement? I bought the car in this condition and all the owner could tell me was that It wouldn't go forward, and that sometimes reverse would do the same, at which time it would sometimes engage in a forward gear. This is my first
Volvo and as such, I'm not at all familiar with the car's "quirks". Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks.
