Hi, all.
I have to change the speedometer cable on my '84 (automatic transmission, normally aspirated) sedan.
The last time I did this kind of job was about (very roughly) late 1960's, on a '60 Chevy. That time, I just released the conduit at the transmission, pulled out the old one, slipped in the new one, turned it a bit until it plugged into the speedometer's head, and then reattached the tranny end to the transmission's connection. I never touched the speedometer's end.
Any different with this Volvo? I have a vague memory of reading (somewhere, a long time ago) that on these cars you have to disconnect the conduit at *both* ends (at the tranny and also at the speedometer) and use a string (first tied to one end of the old cable) to pull the new cable through -- maybe because the conduit is too convoluted to easily "snake" the cable through it?
Is this right?
I checked my green (Volvo's) manuals tonight, and I also checked Bentley. I couldn't find any procedure for this (and that leads me to suspect whether my ancient recollection of the "string pull" was real or not).
Any advice on this job is certainly appreciated.
Thanks, all.
