I have done this for a 1981 240 Sedan. And that was some time ago. I remember I did not have to do the "string pull" and it was a pretty straight forward job. disconnect on both end remove the old one and recommect the new one. The new cable does have to go through the firewall. And my recollection on that was "not hard". Hope this help!
