760 V6 differential 700 1990

My sons car and i do not live close enough to look at it yet. He stopped at a stop sign and when he hit the gas to pull out into traffic, the car would not move. Anyway, comes down to, the drive shaft going into the differential is spinning but the the axles coming out of the diff. don't. I have had 740's, 760 4 cyl. and a 240 however, his description of the diff. doesn't sound like the ones i have had. His description to me, at this point, is that the axle seems not to be engaged into the diff. On my 760 4 cyl, 4 bolts into a plate held the axle in the shaft. If this is accurate how does this happen? How is this diff. different? He is not really experienced in car repairs but he has a nechanical side to him and he likes to try so i give him credit. I don't really know if his description is accurate yet. Also, does this car have the nivomats?
