AW71 OD not engaging 200 1989

240 sedan automatic 300K kilometers highway

The OD has been not engaging intermittently when cold for about two years now.
Three months ago, it refused to engage completely and never engaged again.

When the switch is pressed, the dash light goes on as expected. I verified the resistance of the solenoid and it was nil.

Rather than buying another solenoid, I decided to perform the ever-popular modification of grinding down (dremel) the wall between the inner and out holes. This made it the same as the bypass plalte that IPD sells.

Anyhow, I retained 100% cleanliness, both at the solenoid and at the top pf the tranny, cleaned up the seals and put it back.

Problem is, still absolutely no OD.

Q: Is the OD internal of the tranny prone to failure?
