window regulator: stipped gears? 140-160 1970

so i could turn the handle and spin to my hearts content: no move-age on the window. i figured it was of the track, but it generally stays in place and i peaked behind the door panel and all looked well. so: stripped gears in the winder mechanism thang? this is on a 1970 142, left front door. will 240 window regulator work? anybody been there/done that recently?
