This is related to the swap I'm gearing up for this week.
The B18 is coming from the parts car, reportedly 70,000 original miles and ran fine when parked. However it has had the carb off the Weber DGV manifold for some time. Rag was stuffed in opening. Also the distributor was missing but nothing plugged the opening. It was stored under a carport and hood was on but I'm a little concerned dirt/debris may have found its way in.
Last tagged in 1997 and don't know the last time it was started. For anyone keeping score the car was reportedly a '69 but it is in fact a '68 according to the data plate. Was probably on the lot until '69 and registered as such.
Anyhow while the motor is in between cars thought I would open it up and give it a visual inspection.
Anyone have suggestions for cleaning things up if there is visible debris short of a total teardown? Maybe a 50/50 mix of motor oil and kerosene through a pump sprayer?
I will be priming the oil system before first start with fresh oil so maybe just a wipe down will do it.
Any votes on pulling the head? I'm of the mindset that since it handturns I would try running it. If there are any problems I should soon know after after/if it starts. I can always pull the head then if necessary.
This motor isn't really my "Ultimate Volvo" engine. I'm working on a B20 replacement but want to take my time with that. This parts car fell into my lap and the current B18B/M40 is showing its age. Badly worn #3 intake lobe. Pretty strong blowby. Compression fairly even across cylinders 150-160. Some may remember my M40 locked in 3rd recently. Hasn't happened again but it has thought about it so I know it hasn't healed itself.
So if the parts car B18/M40 gets me by into the Fall with better running and economy, great. The B20/M41 can take over then.
Thanks all,
-Mario E.
