My mother's '94 960 has an issue that appartenly keeps getting worse. It starts and runs well, no hiccups or stumbling, smooth like those inline sixes are. The problem is that it can barely get out of its own way. I drove it a few months ago and noticed it was sluggish at low RPMs, and didn't really take off until about 3500rpm. Transmission seemed to shift ok. Now it has gotten worse. She has to plan starts and hills. It's to the point of being dangerous.
It spits codes for the cam sensor and the EGR valve (has always spit the EGR one). Still smooth, and drives OK at higher speed. I think it's either a BIG timing issue or the tranmission controller (TCM) is messing up and starting in a high gear somehow (doesn't seem to slip though).
My father maintains it, but isn't internet savvy and I am two states away... Is the cam sensor as hard to remove as he thinks it is? He claims he can't even reach the electrical connector, let alone the screws holding it in. Also, is it the same part as the cam sensor on my 850?
Would removing the ECM and/or TCM for a period of time to "erase" its memory do anything at all? My thinking is that it may have learned its way into a corner due to some other faulty part.
Any thoughts appreciated.
