update on 71 142E 140-160

Hello folks,
I'm still around. I haven't had a lot of time. I just got married and then moved ( again) Finally having some time to sort out all the issues with the old girl. I thought I would blog a little about them
I just coated My rusty gas tank. I felt really bad finding rust on my piece of antique swedish steel. The process never removed too much of the rust, but it sure did seal the rust up nicely behind that clear resin surface. That was not a hard project. What I learned from the forum was that rusty gas tanks on D-jects lead to damaged fuel pumps destroyed by pumping the rust particles. So I did not drive the car much until I finished that project.
The old gas in the tank was real hard to start my motor with. It took a little while for the new gas to get cycled into the injectors and get the motor running.
When I did run the car before the tank clean up, it ran like crap. I then found that the throttle return spring lever was not securly bolted down. The cam that the TPS was on opened all the way, but the butterfly valve only opened partially, pulled back by the slipping lever. I was getting major jerking that is characteristic of TPS sensor problems. The spring now closes the butterfly valve tightly. This improved seal of the butterfly was augmented by cleaning of the interier of the throttle bottle with a rag and starting fluid. And now the throttle and sensor are in sync, the computer can run the FI properly. That problem took me through every diagnostic trick I Knew.
I got my rebuilt M41 tranny in. Smooth shifting. The replacement bell housing I had to use however did not hold the 5/15 " bolts for the transmission very well. The bolts stripped out. So I drove around a little, tightning them twice, while breaking in the new transmission. I hate pulling the transmissions, that 19" clearance thing under a car balanced on car jacks just gets to me. But I bit the bullet and pulled out the tranny today and installed heli coil threads in the bell housing.
I bought a new new jack that lifts the old Volvo up to 21". There was a lot more room under the car to work. But darn it all, I am not strong enought to lift the M41 up the extra 2 inches. So I bought an adapter for my floor jack so it will serve also as a tranny jack. It will be here in two days. Has anyone else used one?
But the tale goes on. Just as I was going to get the Heli coil inserts from the local hardware store, for the job today, my water pump fails. I did make back home before it froze up bad.
So back to the archieves tonight to brush up on George's instructions for getting the top o-ring water seals to set properly. The pump will be here monday.
It is great getting my motor running right again. Now I can proceed with modifications. I plan to put it on a dyno and get a base line. Then I will upgrade the valve head with a ported head and properly tuned header. Also will start buying the mega squirt components to provide enough fuel for the upgrade.
So, that is an update about my antique swedish piece of steel. Thanks for all the knowledge all of you have shared with me in the past, that has allowed my struggle with all the old car's issues to be successful.
Looking for new old stock parts, steering gear box, and black interier panels.

Joel
