Timing Belt - Engine Damage? 200 1992

I have a 92 240 with 165,000 miles. Last night the engine gave out when I was going about 25 miles per hour. Did not hear any strange noise, just quit running. When trying to restart, the engine sounds like it is spinning faster then normal (but does not start). I popped off the distributor cap and when trying to start the engine, the distributor does not turn.

Sounds like a timing belt.

Does anyone know if this could have caused any damage to the rest of the engine? Could the pistons have banged against the valves due to the timing belt breaking??

I would appreciate any tips. Thanks.
