Well, I finally got around to swapping out my one piece exhaust with ZS carbs to a two piece SU HS6 setup, and man what a difference! My old tractor has turned into a little sportscar! All my engine problems seem resolved and everything is running better than it has in at least ten years.
The transplanted SUs are dirty and used. Despite their great performance, they clearly need some rebuilding and cleanup. After checking out the Brickboard archives, I have several ideas but would appreciate confirmation.
1. I want to replace the metering needles. The ones in there now are scratched and may be mismatched. I replaced some parts in the float area that were mismatched when I did a partial rebuild yesterday. I was thinking of type KD needles for plucky performance. Good choice? Swedish Treasures has them for $25 each. Do any other online retailers sell them for less?
2. Are velocity stacks going to do anything but look cool on the carbs? If yes, are stubby stacks mounted inside the filter the way to go?
3. Are (phoenic?) spacers really necessary, or is the one piece heat shield enough?
4. Should I use 10w30 motor oil in the dashpot instead of the type A trans. fluid I have in there now? I live in a southern climate.
5. The springs under the dashpot are a little rusty. Does this mean I should change them?
6. Is it enough to simply attach the manual choke cable to the rear carburetor as I did with the Zenith Stromberg?
Many thanks for any comments or suggestions. I'm very pleased with the SUs and want to make sure I have them in tip-top condition.
