low pressure port wont seal. 200 1987

I've had this car for about a year now and decided a couple of months ago to start up the ac system. I attached a r134 type adaptor fitting to the low pressure port on the back of the compressor and added some r12 replacement gas (enviro-safe) - compressor started and a/c was nice and cool, but when I attempted to remove the r134 fill hose I had a major leak, so I just left the inexpensive fill hose attached with the valve closed and the system operated well - until a few days ago - the heat in the engine compartment and the constant pressure in the fill hose that I left attached caused the hose to burst and I lost all pressure in the system.

I figured the r134 fill adaptor was the likely culprit so I replaced it tonite and attempted to recharge- but I still get no seal at all - is there a replaceable valve in the low side port on the back of the compressor? Sure wish I could see the back of the compressor rather than working by "feel"- or even better I wish the service port was in a friendly location like on my 740! Can the low pressure port be serviced - is it just a Schrader valve with a screw out valve stem? or should I look for another compressor?

Thanks!
Jim
