Hi guys,
Now I'm sure that you all have been wondering why in the world I would go a day without posting some sort of problem with my car. Well the reason was simply that I took a couple of days off to take the family on a little mini-vacation. The vacation was much needed and the days were great but now it's time to put my nose back to the grindstone and try to get this thing ready for my daughter to drive.
My newest issues are as follows:
First, I actually took the car out on the road today for the first time. It has been sitting in the garage for nearly a month while I sorted out a myriad of problems. Well today was the day that she got new shoes and I'm sure she is VERY happy about this. While driving to the tire store I was convinced that front end work was right around the corner. As soon as I would approach 55 mph the steering wheel would literally shake in my hands very hard. Well I'm happy to report that after giving her some new tires she drives like a new one so that was a relief.
Well while driving over to the tire shop I noticed that my odometer wasn't working. I figured that I had simply unplugged something while trying to track down my charging circuit problems and figured I would pull the cluster back out and try to sort it all out. Well on the way home with the new tires it suddenly started working again, so does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this sort of thing?
The next problem is the fuel level indicator...
I had always assumed that the thing was simply very low on fuel and that was the reason that it wasn't registering. Now at times the needle would be up just a tad (like to the center of the red part of the gauge) while at other times it was completely at the bottom of the gauge. Well today I pulled in to fill her up for the first time and the tank only held about 8 gallons. Now this does probably give me an answer as to why she has been running a little rough. I mean once it warms up the thing runs like a new car but upon starting it there is some hesitation and it will die when putting the car into gear. Well considering that this car has been sitting for four years I'd say that I have some pretty lousy gas in the system. Now I did add a can of Lucas fuel injector cleaner before filling up today so I'm hoping this will clean things out a little. But...back to my question...
Where do you think I should start looking for the problem with the fuel gauge? I'm going to have it up on jackstands tomorrow to change the oil anyway so do you all think the problem could be in the wire running from the fuel sender to the gauge? I figured I might start looking for a short or possibly a break in the wire, but I wanted to know your thoughts first.
I am also happy to report that thanks to your help my charging circuit is working perfectly. The problem was a bad diode trio used on the repair. They said it's the first time they can remember that they got a bad trio from the factory but of course there is a first for everything.
As always, any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.
Dave
