Odometer and fuel level indicator problem 200 1986

Hi Dave,

Yes I was wondering where you went. ;-)

Seriously, did you save that photo of my test light I sent you in the Charging- Take two thread? I had it hooked up to do exactly what you want to do - start looking for the fuel level indicator problem. Like before, this is a job for a real glowing light bulb, no fancy LED gadget.

If the photo isn't clear enough, the gray wire is where the test light is connected. If the gauge and wiring toward the back are all fine and dandy, the lamp will glow some and the needle will rise off of empty. In my case, it proved the problem was in the sending unit - just what I didn't want to hear. I'd much rather pull the instrument cluster.

That brings me to the odometer. If the speedometer works and the odometer fails, the problem is inside the meter unit. Usually it is the small gear which has a tooth broken. Less commonly, it is a heat-sensitive solder joint on the circuit board of the speedometer. I've some hints on disassembly and repair in http://cleanflametrap.com in the links at the end.

You are touching on all the fun parts at once, aren't you?
