This is a 1983 240 GLT, no intercooler. I've been trying fix a hunt for idle on cold start problem for some time. The engine settles down after a short time and then runs fine, including boost when needed. I finally took it into a reputable shop to have them check the idle problem, and the diagnosis came back as needs a new turbo; have this one rebuilt. The suspicious symptom is that on a cold start, the idle is smooth for a very short time, then the turbo starts whining before the hunt for idle starts. Not being familiar with this type of behavior in turbos, I thought I should ask for comments here. I'm mainly interested in whether the whining turbo is symptomatic for replacement or rebuild. I don't notice anything unusual once it's warmed up or when driving. The car's in the shop at the moment, and the mechanic wants to check it out again tomorrow. Thanks.
