Intermittent transmission-fault light (orange arrow) 900 1996

'96 960, 141K
The transmission fault light (orange arrow under tach) has started coming on intermittently lately. No pattern to light coming on-highway driving after 20 miles sometimes, city driving after 3 miles other times, and no pattern to stop flashing-clears itself overnight sometimes, sometimes takes a couple of drives to clear. Once it went off in the 10 minutes I was in a store. FAQ's talk about the PNP switch-2 posts say if I can shift out of Park or if transmission seems to work OK, it's not the PNP switch and is OK to drive. This seems to be the case with mine-shifts through all gears normally and I can move the shift lever normally.

This is my first 960, and I've owned it only 1 year, so no previous experience with this problem, and no idea of what has ever been done to this system.

Guesses? Suggestions? Should I park the car until I resolve this? Ignore the light as long as the transmission still shifts properly? Is this the sign of an impending PNP switch failure? I don't have a code reader, so would it help to get the codes read somewhere?

Thanks,
Mark
