Battery Removal 940 900

Probably pretty simple, but what is the trick to removing the battery from a 93 940 Turbo ? It is on the driver's side, and there is a vertical rod coming up from the front side of the battery, that has a loop on the end. So far, I cannot turn this rod, or determine how to remove the battery.
