Wiper Problem 900

My intermitent wiper setting isn;t working correctly. I have a 92 944 GL and the stalk is on the right side of the steering wheel. Moving the stalk up is supposed to engage the intermitent wipers. When I do this is doesn't work. However if I move the wiper stalk slightly down the wipers do come on in the intermitent setting and sometimes they stay on and sometimes they only complete the sweep while I am holding the stalk down. Any ideas?
