Way to tell synthetic oil from regular? 200 1992

Hi. The prior owner never paid attention -- had a shop change his oil, but did not keep records/receipts. Is there a way to tell whether this car is using regular or synthetic oil? The dipstick shows a reddish/brown color. The service light has come on, and I figure it's due for a change. I've driven the car about 3,000 miles already and not needed to add oil yet. Thanks.
