I just noticed that the speedo in my '81 245 wasn't working yesterday as I left work. By the time I got home (7 miles) it was working again. The odometer was working the whole time, so the cable is still turning. I thought that in these early 240s (prior to the electronic pickup on the differential) the speedo head was totally mechanical. I must be wrong. Can someone explain how they work? There must be electronic or magnetic coupler to transfer the spinning of the cable in the needle movement. I have been running a 140mph speedo dial for many years without a problem. I still have the 85mph original unit sitting in a box.
When I searched for this problem, all I saw were responses to 700/900 speedo problems, and for late 200 series, with the electronic pickup variety.
