240 1986 Wagon, engine quits intermittently, usually runs o.k, how to diagnose? 200

Greetings all,

I have two Volvo 1986 240 station wagons.

I'll call them "A" and "B".

Car A runs well most of the time. It will quit suddenly, and not start again for several hours. After unsuccessfully cranking the engine for about 30 seconds, the tailpipe does not smell like raw gas. I have replaced the fuel pump and filter, and swapped the fuel pump relay with Car B. The problem persists.

Car B is dependable, except it stalls when cool, and sometimes hesitates during acceleration.

As a diagnostic measure, I can swap parts from Car B to Car A, and observe if the problem goes away.

What are the parts most likely to cause this problem? I would like to start with the parts easiest to swap.

Thanks
mkoch
