Could I have put my distributor upside down 700 1989

A few months ago I pulled my distributor on my 89 760 turbo. I made a mark on it so I could put it back, but it turned out a little messy. I think I may have rotated it all the way around or screwed up the position some how. Is that possible because I haven't been able to get it to run right since then I also put it a new timing belt in the process, the old one was badly cracked. I'm almost positive I have the timing belt in correctly everything lines up. I ended up getting a new distributor (old one had a hall sensor that I already soldered twice tried to take it out with no luck), just got it today still can’t get it on time. Also can damage the engine running it off time cause it sounds like it's knocking when I am trying to set the time. I would really appreciate help I'm really stuck here and need to get this brick back on the road. I even picked up an ecu from ebay but haven’t put it in yet. By the way if anyones looking for a hall sensor brand new bosch never touched in class ads
