Sudden Death this AM, suspect main fuel pump after further review. 200 1986

Hello,

This AM Inga AKA as a 1986 245DL 222K (and just turned 22 years old) suddenly died moving with the speed and flow of traffic. That would be maybe 75 mph, at first I though the transmission was slipping but as I bleed my speed off knew the engine was dead. Got towed off the highway and caught a ride with the wife. Had the car towed to the house. Jumped the fuel pumps and she hesitated and then fired up before she went on the tow truck. Bad relay and this after noon put a donor relay in and she started up. But then I took the first relay out from 1999 to check the solder joints and they were solid. Put the old relay in and she started up also. Let it run in the drive for about five minutes and suddenly the idle surged up and down then she died like you turned of the key. This time she fired back up, but the idle was still surging up and down, and she does not want to throttle up, very hesitant and no power.

The main fuel pump is buzzing loudly and the fuel pump relay is getting warm to the touch. This is the original main fuel pump, going through the records. I installed a new pick up pump in the tank this spring. Oh Yes and I tried three relays with identical results. The pump starts off quite and then buzzes louder as the surge starts up.

How hard is that main pump to change out? Consider a weak level 2 and the fact that Santa is also due this month. That makes one braver than other times of the year.

Any advice, spiritual guidance, and tips would be greatly appreciated.

Supposed to be in the mid 80's Saturday so I get to sweat and crawl around on the concrete. Could be worse, could be raining. Ahhhh Good Times.

Regards,

PT
