960 stuck drivers seat front- back track 900 2003

Hello out there,
my daughter visiting from 'out west', all of 5' tall used the car over the holiday, and adjusted the seat.. all the way forward.. when i next used the car.. I got in, and the seat went back two " and stopped, its range was 2".. leaving me scrunched up against the steering wheel.
The brickboard forums talk about removing the seat.. which i did with my brother's help.. all went well.. and checking the cable that goes from mid motor.. to gear that drives forward reverse traverse position on track.. connected alt source of power as instructed.. and it drove motor, and cable turned.. pulled cable and reversed it.. still turned fine.. BUT when inserted into gearbox, the movement seized in about 1/2 rotation.. took apart gear box and found plastic gear inside that turns a worm gear that connects to the cable.. the plastic gear (about 2' diam).. had many cracks running through the 4 holes in center of gear .. after testing, retesting multiple times.. it seems that when a load is placed on the large plastic gear.. with cracks.. the cracks expand and mess with the worm gear, causing the whole mechanism to freeze..
Anyone with this expereince? Does that sound right? Volvo parts man says they do not have that plastic gear.. time for a new seat from junkyard? other experiences like this??
PS I would love to have a simple lever that made my seat go back and forth and tilt up and down.. there must be a kazillion $ of electronics tucked under that seat and enough engineering to solve the world's problems.. simpler is better!
