Fuel pump lever play 120-130

EeSatie, J Dimenna has had a further nonstart (actually it wasn't a nonstart - he was driving and the car stopped in the familiar manner of running out of gas - starved, then died) problem with his 122. Spark appears to be fine. It's been isolated to fuel not pumping from the pump.
He disconnected line and blew out line from filter back to disconnected tank. some gas and crud revealed. Cleared tank outlet. There may be more loose crud in the tank, as removing the sender, he was able to see the skeltal remain of some small lizard. In any event with the line reconnected to the tank he blew through the line and someone at filler spout felt heard air. Installed gas and after plenty of cranking, no fuel coming out of pump to carb. Pulled the pump and cranking by hand the actuating lever it pumps fine - disassembled and the diaphragm is newish, pliable, no cracks. So where's the problem?

Filter passes air although there was some debris from tank in filter (before pump).

With the pump in my hand, there is 1/2" of play before pumping actuation begins. Is this much play too much, i.e. does the cam take this much play into account - could I be able to pump by hand a pump that the cam wouldn't pump? I don't think so, but do not know the tolerances.
