In-tank fuel pump wiring gone, need advice! 200 1988

Happy new year guys and gals,
Just had a question or two regarding my in-tank fuel pump situation. i have an 88 240 wagon 191btw. For awhile now the dash fuel gauge hasn't worked but that hasn't been a big enough problem for me.. just watch my mileage and stuff. Now recently i started noticing a pretty bad fuel smell around the car, although i haven't noticed any really bad leak spots, anyway my bro just had to replace his in-tank fuel assembly because of some rusting hoses, so i figured i would check mine. Well the actual metal pipes coming out of the tank seem to be alright however the wiring is totally gone. So one problem solved, now i just have to figure out where the other leak is? Now the question is how much strain is put on the main fuel pump by the lack of an intank one, is this enough of a problem to replace my intank one? Also any suggestions on how to easily fine or spot a fuel leak?? K thanks a lot folks
-Caylen
