Charge short on 740 Turbo wagon 700 1991

My hope is that if I relay the exact sequence of events someone who had similar symptoms might be able to lead me to the source of my troubles so I wont have to gut the entire engine harness.

1. ABS light flickers
2. ABS light comes on
3. Headlights and dash lights dim
4. SRS light comes on
5. Tachometer fluctuates
6. Car loses power, dies, and fails to start for an hour or so until battery rebounds.

This to me spelled classic alternator failure, so I replaced it. After a day of driving same thing happened. On older models I read this is a common problem and usually meant a bad D+ wire. A cursory view of my battery and alternator wires didn't turn up any problem areas. I'm wondering if I should continue on this end or head behind the dash. I'm also wondering if this could have anything to do with my ignition which has always been kind of "sticky". Thanks for any specific pinpoint suggestions.
