Good morning, long time no post. Sorry about that, life has a way of kicking you when you least want it!
Anyway, here's the problem du jour. Hope y'all can help me out.
My sons' 130,000 mile '87 760 turbo wagon (B230FT) started acting up on him last night so he parked it and called me in - you know, Dad'll know what to do....
Car runs fine for a few minutes, idles and drives normally, then all of a sudden out of the blue the boost guage jumps erratically up into the yellow and the car slows waaaay down. No power whatsoever. It seems that if you completely take your foot off the gas pedal and then ease ever so slightly back into it the car will (sometimes) pick back up.
Well, I drove it about 11 miles home from where he'd left it parked, and the hot smell was overpowering. Shut her down, opened the hood and nearly blinded myself on the cherry red hot turbo. More specifically, where the turbo bolts to the exhaust manifold. The glowing, although pretty darned intense, was pretty much limited to that area, easing further up into the exhaust side of the turbo housing.
I have absolutely no idea what could be causing this, and to be completely honest neither my Son nor I can think of anything out of the ordinary leading up to this. I do know that regardless of how cool it may have looked, it really is something very bad, and I now wish I hadn't seen it... :)
In the name of full disclosure, I should point out that just the day before we had picked up the car from our local tranny shop where the rear main seal had just been replaced.
Thinking aloud, the exhaust seemed to be breathing fine too or at least I didn't notice that it seemed restricted at all.
Oh great Brickboard Gurus, please look upon my post and request for help with understanding eyes and a sympathetic heart. Help me to help my Son get his car back on the road!
Thanks in advance, guys. :)
