AMM & "Limp Home Mode' 200 1985

I have an '85 244 M46 with 199,965 miles. When I recently started the car at a client's home it would run for 1 second then die (the only other time it wouldn't start in my 20 years of ownership was when the 25 amp FI fuse was at fault). Tried starting again and it shuddered when I gassed it then died. Returned the next day and replaced the fuel pump relay with a spare on hand which made no difference. I then disconnected the AMM (like I had read about doing on this Brickboard) and it started and idled fine but would hesitate when given gas too fast. I drove it home in "Limp Home Mode" and found that as long as I didn't give it gas too fast or take hills in too high of a gear that it ran well enough - got it up to 40 in 4th. Back home I swapped out the AMM with one I got off a 740 for $25 last year at a junk yard (cleaned it first with IPD AMM spray cleaner) and it started right up and idled like new. What a relief to dodge the bullet of tow charges and the cost of stealership diagnosis, labor, and parts.

My thanks to all those who contribute their knowledge to this forum which makes it possible for us to keep these old 240 "diamonds in the rough" maintained economically.
