Well. This is tentative, but my mileage had jumped significantly.
This is poor record keeping on my part since I forget when I did this - maybe wednesday...? I've been spending every night after work out on the car. It kinda all blurs together...
Anyway, I serviced the fuel lines this week. I replaced the rubber hose from the pump to the carbs with a hard 1/4" fuel line and an npt elbow fitting replacing the brass barb on the front of the AC fuel pump The new line is bent to pass in front of the valve cover and cornering at the intake manifold with a 4" rubber connection to the carbs. I also completely removed the in-line fuel filter from the system. I'll just rely on the brass screen in the AC pump to keep the big crud out of my carbs.
Anyway, this is ALL that I did. I fueled up Tuesday on the way home and put 110 miles (3.5 round trips to work) on the car by Friday. I checked this against my odometer.
My fuel level has just dropped below the half-tank mark but I did not fill up to check the actual fuel burned. BUT, I can say for sure, that up until this week, 115 miles on the car has equated to 8.5 gallon of fuel. If I have burned approx 6 gallons, that is nearly 20 MPG - probably better if you consider that I put 30 or so of those miles on the car with the old fuel line setup.
So, unless this is some crazy fluke, my mileage looks to be coming up to normal.
I have previously improved my mileage by replacing fuel filters and giving up on the renewable glass-body filter. But that was when my mileage was *really* bad less than 10 mpgs when I first started driving the car.
Before you ask, YES, I always use clamps on the hoses - usually the shielded kind, not the cheese-grater type. I've also replaced *all* my fuel hoses at least three times.
Unless this is a fluke, I've been losing A LOT of fuel from my hose connections either on the carb side, or on the pre-pump side.
I'll report actual mileage when I fill-up next.
I also discovered something in my manifold that may be playing a role. That's a separate question though.
