Life expectancy: fuel pump, 1993 240 200

Hello all:

Any informed opinion out there on the general (average?) life expectancy of the fuel pump on a 1993 240 wagon?

What is prompting the question is the fuel pump on my 1990 240 recently quit at 242,000 miles, but since I bought this high mileage blue beauty at 216,000 miles in 1999, I don't know if this is its first fuel pump or not (this 240 is our daily driver, being subjected to an insane number of almost exclusively really short trips around town, and is an incomparable treasure).

We take our 1993 240 wagon (127,000 miles) on nothing but long haul trips to far northern Wisconsin where Volvo service essentially does not exist. Not many people either, for that matter. I really do not want to risk turning the key and having no fuel pump, so am trying to determine what is about the right time to replace the fuel pump on a preventative basis. I don't want to replace it if it should have a lot of life still left, but don't want to risk it going out either.

Thanks in advance for any comments!
