Coil voltage 200 1982

My 82 240 quit the other day, so I hauled it home and found a post on this forum about the coil, and a faulty connection to the brown wire on the passenger side firewall. Jumpered the + side of the coil to the + side of the battery and the car ran fine.

Called my local Volvo guru and he recommended a permanent jumper between the ballast resistor on the firewall and the coil. Quick easy fix, not wasting time trying to find some esoteric wiring fault.

I have no resistor.

It's a white cap Chrysler ignition that now runs fine with the new wire, but it's getting a continuous 12 volts to the coil when running. Is this normal? Did they use an internal resistor coil that year or should I add an external resistor? I don't have points to burn up but am worried the coil may give out at an inopportune time.
