Wagon tailgate latch assembly - need help 700 1988

The tailgate on my 1988 740 Turbo wagon opens from the inside but not by using the outside handle. I read the FAQ, disassembled everything, and I can manually pull up on the release rod that is actuated by the outside handle - it rotates a metal piece in the latch assembly but nothing happens - it doesn't move the necessary parts to release the door . This isn't a case of the pull rod needing adjustment per the FAQ because I can move it more with my hand than the outside handle ever could. I don't see any obvious problems with the latch - does anyone have a photo of a known good one or could describe how that pull rod is supposed to release the latch? I will try to post a photo later...Thanks
