As posted last night, my alternator belt busted when I was 80 miles from home. When I got home, I went through my service records and discovered the belt had just been replaced last July, and the car was only driven another 20,000 miles since then. After a $325 tow, the mechanic called me this morning and said the belt broke because a rubber bushing that supports the alternator had split, causing the alternator unit itself to sag, which then caused the belt to loosen and thus fly off. He said when the belt broke/flew off, it also frayed the power steering pump housing. The alternator bushing, & belt (with labor) will cost around $200 to repair, and I was quoted approximately $240 to repair the frayed power steering pump. He said the part needed to fix the power steering housing only cost $10 or so, but is very "labor intensive." I retained the belt from the alternator - what is left of it looks like chewed rubber and even the threading/rope is exposed. Does all this jive? Thanks for any advice, -Scott Nauert in STL
