One of our cars is an '88 740 GLE. Recently it quit in the street and was restarted after a jump start. We installed a brand new battery and no change. While trying to start the car all I get is the seatbelt and ABS lights. After turning the key and removing it the ABS light stays on but very dimly. Pushing the gear selector back to Neutral will stop the ABS light from glowing.
One time in ten all the lights on the dash come on, and then all I get is a healthy click of the solenoid but the starter won't crank.
I checked the manuals and there are only a few items in the circuit. Ignition switch, battery, starter, and neutral safety switch plus wires & connections. Does this sound like an ignition switch or neutral safety switch issue. I'm thinking ignition switch because if it was the NSS all the lights on the dash would illuminate and they don't.
The terminals on the battery are clean and the connections on the starter look OK too, as does the braided wire between solenoid and starter.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Thx,
Doug
