What is the wire that comes through the shifter boot? 200 1993

Hi

1993 245 NA manual.

For fathers day, I took apart the interior, cleaned, put relays back into their proper homes, rebuilt seats, etc.

While I was messing around, I took the rubber boot off the shifter.

There was a little wire that poked up through the boot. As far as I could tell, it started somewhere on top of the transmission, and was held in place by a thick layer of grease. It came through the shifter boot, and ended up plugged into a connector on the passenger side of the center console.

What is it? What does it do? Should I be worried that it was looking pretty bare (insulation deteriorated)?

It is a red wire and a blue wire, connecting to a blue connector, with a red wire and blue wire on the other side
