122 starting problem 120-130 1961

HI all,

i have a 1961 amazon that i drive, maybe once or twice a week in the nice weather. ive only noticed this problem in the last 6 mos or so, but whenever i go to start it, even if it has sat for only 6 or 8 hours, the starter will crank normally for about 10 seconds and then fade away. the battery looks nearly new, but it did come with the car and it did sit most of the winter uncharged. so i probably need a new one anyway.

so i jump it, drive it around, and the only way it'll restart is if it's still WARM. so, here's my quandary: it is fitted with saome kind of Chrysler alternator, dont have the part number off hand.. with an external voltage regulator. it puts out a consistent 14.2x volts just at idle with nothing on.. the terminals seem clean and tight, and like i said, the battery looks fairly new. now, when i add a load such as wiper and lights, the voltage jumps to 14.6x or so.. strange? some kind of weird overcompensating voltage regulator?

i know i will probably need a new battery, but i dont want to just replace it if it will only get fried byt the funky regulator? any advice??

thanks

carissa and police station the 1961 amazon
