Stalling on the freeway in HOT weather 700 1986

I was driving down the I-10 today outside Phoenix in 115 degree heat. Was driving around 65 mph when the engine suddenly stalled. There was no indication of any problem prior to that and it would actually start running well again for a few seconds and then stall again. It was going on and off like that until I pulled over to the side. I waited for a while and tried to start the car again. It was running very rough at around 400-500 rpm and would stall right away when pressing down on the gas pedal. The main fuel pump is fairly new and I can hear/feel that its running. Could it possibly be a bad in-tank pump, and would a failed in-tank pump really cause the engine to stall like that while at speed?

Any other suggestions what it could be?

Thanks,

Jan
