940 overheating

Hi Folks, I have a 93 940 se estatewith a over heating problem, have had it to a local mechanic who believes there is a possibility of the head gasket going\gone although there is no sign of water in the oil or oil in the expansion tank...approching the end of a 500 mile trip the temp gauge went sky high, i stopped no sign of overheating, no water leaking ( that i could see) either under the car or in it ( heater matrix ) engine sounded normal....next day it took 5 litres of water !!!
I carried on got another 100 miles or so same again.
Running round town it does not overheat hence the mechanic struggling to find anything whilst it ticks over in his yard, as soon as i get 50-80 miles it seems to have large coolant loss.....
any body goy any ideas and can a head gasket act in this way, previously i have known them fail ...loss of power etc, water evident in the oil

many thanks in advance
Guy
