940 overheating

Have the mechanic perform a cooling system pressure test, which should pinpoint where the leak occurs. This essentially pressurizes the coolant reservoir and thus the whole system.
Look hard at your heater water valve too: that can leak, coolant can drop straight down and be blown back and it appears nowhere.

For the head gasket, do a compression test.
